How To Make Ground Beef. Easy And Safe

Not sure how to make ground beef of your own? You are in the right place then!

Before we start, why would one even bother wasting time at home and grinding their own meat? Why not just buy it in the store? Besides, it is cheaper than ordinary steaks and roasts... Maybe something is wrong? Well, yes. Something is definitely wrong.

Jamie Oliver made a cool video on the so-called "pink slime" so controversially known in the US. Basically it is the beef trimmings, which are mechanically separated from fat and bones. Then the ammonia is used to kill the bacteria.

"Pink slime" is used as a filler in the conventional ground beef and other beef-based processed foods. It is not required to mention it on the label - so we can't know when we have it, but...it is estimated that 70% of all ground beef products have that filler included in them! It is terrible. 



The good news is that Canada and the EU banned this. However something unpleasant still goes inside the mince (ever noticed bone particles in burgers?).

Making your own ground beef has many advantages. One of the most important ones - you know exactly what's inside! You are also free to use any cut of beef, mix it with other meats, add spices and seasonings.

Grinding your own beef is much safer too. The air contact is very limited, so the bacteria growth is under more control. This is especially important when you are aiming for the raw stuff like steak tartar. Let's see how to make ground beef at home.



Personally I use cheap parts, such as chuck steaks, for my ground beef production. I also add seasonings before grinding - the mincer actually helps to mix the spices/veggies evenly.



If you decide to buy a mincer, see how easily it can be assembled and cleaned. You don't want to be wasting a lot of time washing it up afterwards.

Also check if the spare parts are easy to get. The blade inside might need some sharpening in the future. 

Remember, don't buy a low-quality cheap machine. The mincer I have is 14 years old and it still runs really well.


Spread the mince evenly in the plate. Use the knife if it's necessary to cut the strands off the nozzle.


Want even softer mince? Use the grinder again and rerun the ready mince through it!

This is not necessary at all, especially if you use of the techniques described in hamburger meat recipes


Ready ground beef! Now you can do whatever you want with it: use it right away or freeze it in a food-safe plastic bag or a food container.
